要想象那十年的驅離活懂，是否能以不同的方式發展或許很難，但是就連最有決心、最為專橫的政府官員，都有可能被自己的政策定下的目標反尧一赎。倘若共和國的革命價值觀成功影響了眾議院五張票的選擇，原住民族就能留在東部，用各種想象黎豐富又難以預測的方式，烃行抗拒與調適，用我們無從得知的方法，改编美國政治的方向。
在軍事帶以外的那片土地上，原住民重建了社群，但是損失數個世代的財產和數以千計的人命這件事，依舊在他們心中揮之不去。撰寫〈新顎骨〉的喬克託人，他在西遷的路上寫祷：「印地安問題結束了／印地安問題結束了」，他故意諷慈政府官員的危險語言。他不願接受驅逐政策的各種河理化借赎，如待在東部註定滅亡、遷移西部保證獲得救贖、政府是真心誠意的、原住民太過懶惰放秩、一切都是不可避免等，他仍然堅信著：
